Chapter 16

Once back inside the Spires, the commotion is near deafening, splintering the peaceful hold I had briefly embraced. Within minutes we are being pulled in opposite directions. Duty calls for us both. I send a lingering smile to my Night Sky and hurry towards the kitchens.

A squabble breaks out between two older riders across the granite hewn table. As I see the stone mugs overturned and easily identify the smell of the grog, it is no wonder more squabbles aren’t occurring.

“What is this about? You, Tondre, step away from the table and drop your sword.”

“Queen Seyra, it wasn’t my doing! Morlin spoke ill of my dragon and even bumped us in flight before we arrived. Oh, he apologized upon landing, but sits here criticizing my dragon Slash for the scar running down his back and his slight limp. He is a battle marked dragon and that alone should prove his worth!”

“Morlin, is this true?” My eyes flash in anger to hear any of our dragons poked fun of.

“Nay, Queen. You’re listening to a drunken sot. I never speak ill of our dragons.”

I might be tempted to believe Morlin if it wasn’t for his smirk as he turned to glare at Tondre. My brow raises as my eyes narrow at them both. Before I can say another word, a soft voice breaks the air.

“Morlin lies. Not only did he say those things and try to crash Slash and Tondre, but he has also been throwing rotten eggs at Slash in flight.”

I turn to see Kareena behind me, her golden-brown eyes looking like twin suns ablaze. One hand is raised, fingernails bitten and worn, but it is the white light coming from her hand that stops all speech.

After a moment Morlin pushes from the table, clattering his chair as he rises. “Who are you to say these things? You are nothing but an unwanted kitchen scrap eater! Be gone from here before I pitch you into the kitchen rubbish pile!”

I don’t remember leaping onto the table and grabbing Morlin by his brown jerkin. My nose is only a finger-width away from his when Dreyth roars. Silence echoes through the eating chamber.

Thunder claps as Dreyth’s voice shakes the timbers. “Morlin! One warning only. Back up against the wall!”

Stumbling over his tumbled chair, he flattens against the wall, his eyes as large as dragon eggs.

“Seyra, tell me what this man has done to you. Now.” Dagger-like teeth glint in the light as he continues to stare down Morlin.

“It was an argument between Morlin and Tondre. Morlin denies his words and actions towards Tondre’s dragon, Slash. Then… then Kareena interceded and caught him in his lies. When she did, he called her horrid names and I couldn’t stand it a moment longer.” I practically spit the words out. I wipe my fist across my mouth.

Kareena turns to Dreyth, one hand illuminated, and says, “The Queen’s words are true. Hostility has been building between these two riders because of Morlin’s words and actions, spurred further by their drinking of the grog.
